9 Steps to the Perfect Pour-Over Coffee
Dec 20, 2024
Pour-over brewing is a popular method for making a delicious, full-bodied cup of coffee at home. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to brew the perfect cup of coffee using the pour-over method.
-
Start with fresh, high-quality beans: Look for beans that are roasted within the past week or two (like Carpenter Coffee Co.'s "roasted-to-order" beans!), and store them in an airtight container away from heat and light.
-
Measure the ingredients: Use a scale to measure our 30 grams of beans and 500 grams of fresh, cold water. This is the ideal coffee-to-water ratio for a pour-over coffee.
-
Grind the beans: Measure out 30 grams of beans and grind to a consistent, even grind. The grind size should be medium to medium-fine, as this allows for optimal extraction.
-
Boil the water: Heat the water up, just shy of a full boil. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit and the ideal brewing temperature for coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees. If your water is too hot it can burn the coffee and alter the taste.
-
Prepare the pour-over cone: Place the cone on top of your mug and insert a filter. Before you add the coffee, rinse the filter with hot water to remove any papery taste.
-
Add the coffee: Place the ground coffee in the filter, and shake gently to even them out.
-
Pour the hot water: Slowly pour the hot water over the ground coffee, making sure to wet all the grounds. Use a circular motion to ensure even extraction.
-
Wait and extract: Continue using a circular motion to pour the coffee until all 500 grams of hot water has been used. Allow the coffee to brew for about 3 to 4 minutes.
-
Serve and enjoy: Once the coffee is brewed, pour it into your mug, sit back, and enjoy your perfectly brewed cup of coffee made with the pour-over method!
Remember, brewing coffee is a personal preference, and you may need to experiment with different beans, roasts, brewing times, and ratios to find the perfect cup for your taste. Happy brewing!
